Maxim Brewery Following the closure of Vaux Brewery Sunderland and Wards Brewery, Sheffield on 2nd July 1999, the Double Maxim Beer Company Ltd was established the following year by ex Vaux and Wards employees.
Our main brand Maxim Ale was first brewed in 1901 to celebrate the return of the Maxim gun detachment from the Boer War. Major Ernest Vaux (part of the original brewing family) commanded the detachment, which was part of the Northumberland Hussars. Initially the beer was reduced in strength because landlords complained of their customers falling asleep. In 1938 Vaux Breweries increased the beers strength and Double Maxim was born.

Brinkburn St Brewery Brinkburn St Brewery was formed in January 2015 by founder Lee Renforth, we started brewing in September 2015, after a 9 month period of set-up and trial brewing where we obtained valuable help and support from Marble Beers of Manchester, Magic Rock of Huddersfield and Northern Alchemy in Byker, Newcastle.
Over the last 12 months since (to October 2016) we have brewed over 20 different beers that we have tested in over one hundred (100) pubs and clubs in Tyneside and further afield in an attempt to try to identify what real/craft ale drinkers like. Over this period of developmental brewing and market testing, we have now developed a core range of ten (10) beers to meet what we see at present as a largely 3-tier market.
All of our beers include varying degrees of English, ‘US Pacific Northwest Coast’ hops and New Zealand aromatic hops to make traditional types of English ales with varying degrees of hop character. Our present range of beers includes 2 pale ales, a blonde, a session bitter, an amber ale, a brown ale and a porter, along with 3 signature ‘Hop Head’ ales that are US-west coast style, extra hoppy India Pale Ales (IPA’s).
Our marketing department met (over an Al Baik kebab and a couple of pints) and we thought up a ‘saying’ for Brinkburn St Brewery which is “Canny Lush Beer Like!”
We hope that you think our beer is canny lush and that it brings a little taste of the US Pacific Coast and New Zealand sunshine to Tyneside and to you the drinker.

Firebrick Wey-Aye P.A. 5.8 Wey-Aye P.A. Can there be anything more enjoyable and life affirming than hearing WEY-AYE, it’s more than “yes” it embraces “of course” it states complete support. It can be a response to an offer of a cup of tea or to a motion to proceed with a million pound development project; it can even be said alone, to boost spirits at any stage when constructing flat pack furniture. It definitely applies to the concept of introducing an IPA to the Firebrick line up.
In our picture, the seahorse “haurient” (check your heraldry!) is flanked by hops; seahorses appeared as “supporters” on the Newcastle City coat of arms in 1575 and subsequently on the NUFC badge, they denote Newcastle as a sea port. Hops are the main focus of an IPA, India Pale Ales were heavily hopped to either preserve the beer or disquise the souring after an extended journey by sea. So we have woven into one, the themes of hops, seahorses, and that wonderful Newcastle assertiveness in our WEY-AYE P.A.
"WEY-AYE P.A." 2025 SPONSOR: Samespace Coworking Ltd
Firebrick Firebrick Brewery finds inspiration for its beers in the heritage of Blaydon on Tyne and the North East of England.
The brewery is on Cowen Road, named after Joseph Cowen Junior, MP for Newcastle in the late 19th Century; he was quite a character and a global political figure in his time. His father Joseph Cowen Senior was also an MP and was knighted for his work on the Tyne Commission, improving that river for industrial shipping. Their Blaydon brickworks exported Firebricks around the world.
In summary then: Good blokes who made good bricks and tried to improve the quality of life for people in general – that seemed like a good theme to link our beer to!

Things have changed since we first brewed our APA back in 2010, people take more notice about what they drink and general knowledge of beer has increased hugely. Back then relatively few people could tell you what an American Pale Ale was but now it is one of the most popular styles available, so to avoid confusion we have given the beer a new name, one that fits better with our other bestselling beers.

Muckle Brewing Definition: Muckle – Northumberland & Scottish dialect – great, massive, huge. In Northumberland used mainly as an adjective to describe big, large or mighty; muckle house, muckle tree.
Muckle Brewing is a tiny Northumbrian brewery with big values and mighty flavours. At Muckle Brewing, all of our ales have been influenced by the local landscape and natural features that surround the brewery, located just outside of Haltwhistle in Northumberland.
Situated close to Hadrian’s Wall, in an idyllic rural setting, Muckle Brewing is a craft brewery supplying high quality ales to the local area.
We select the best grains and hops to create ales with layers of flavour, a strong head and a refreshing taste.
Many years of brewing experimentation, testing, successes and failures have culminated in the development of Muckle Brewing’s inaugural four ales.

Muckle Brewing Stanegate IPA 5.4 Stanegate IPA The Stanegate, or stone road, was the northern defensive frontier pre-dating Hadrian’s Wall linking Corstopidum Fort in Corbridge to Luguvalium Fort in Carlisle. Still in use, though now with tarmac replacing stone, perhaps it was interference from local tribes that explains the unusual winding nature of this Roman road.
Stanegate IPA is a hoppy English ale, brewed with Progress and Goldings hops giving floral and minty notes.
Contains: malted barley, wheat

Darwin Brewery Established in 1994 the Darwin Brewery has grown steadily to become one of the most respected micro-breweries in the north of England. Awards like ‘CAMRA North East beer of the Year 2003/4’, ‘2004 Asda Beer Festival’ award and the ‘2005/6 Tesco Beer Challenge’ were perfect ways to celebrate a decade in Business.
Darwin’s first beers were produced on a very small 18 gallon system based at Brewlab at the University of Sunderland. Three years later the brewery expanded to Crook, County Durham with the acquisition of the Hodge’s Brewery and brewed there until 2002 when two factors resulted in a move back to Sunderland.
Firstly continued growth and popularity of the beers meant space was a problem at the Crook plant with production stretched almost to capacity. Secondly, and perhaps even more important was that the recent closure of the Vaux brewery had left the city without a brewery for the first time in over one hundred years.
With both managers and staff having close links to the city the time seemed right to move back to Sunderland, this time with the purchase of Butterknowle’s award winning 12 barrel plant. Darwin pride themselves on the wide range and quality of their beers. This has only been possible thanks to the brewery having access to it’s original 18 gallon test plant.
The Darwin Brewery has always supported training courses at Brewlab with students gaining placement and development experience in brewing, marketing and sales. Today after further developments of Brewlab to a new dedicated location Darwin has moved to make best use of the advanced facilities available at West Quay Court in Sunderland.
Regular and unique beers are produced and our recently appointed brewer, Victoria Thomson, is ably assisted by Brewlab staff and expert resources. Our beers are produced to a high quality specification and are increasingly diverse including lagers, continental styles and historic creations.

Alnwick
The Alnwick Brewery Company Limited initially started to brew beer in Alnwick from around 1750’s from a site in the town’s Dispensary Street. Sadly, in the 1960’s the buildings were pulled down before they could be listed, and the brewery temporarily closed only to be relaunched again in 2005 by the son of the original brewery’s last managing director.
In 2013 the business was acquired by the Harry Hotspur group who also merged into it the significant brewing skills and brewery of another local brewer (namely the former VIP Brewery at Hawkhill).
Since 2016 this integrated business has been focused on building its brewing capacity and extending its product range. From an initial selection of 5 traditional beers namely its range of casks and bottles of IPA, Amber, Stout, Brown & Gold the business has now expanded its product range. In addition to a lager, it now produces our Holy Island beer range, initially only Lindisfarne Brown and Holy Island Bitter, but in 2020 launched a wider range of more modern hoppy beers including,
-St Aidan, a citrus flavoured Cascade
-Whiteblade a light hoppy beer &
-St Cuthbert a light session pale ale
With the popularity for our brews ever increasing we recently launched a refreshing more modern looking branded range of beers in cans which are proving to be extremely popular.
Coming out of lockdown and with the growing focus on staycations our 5 litre containers of beer are being constantly sought-after for all sorts of special social events. And there is more in the pipeline, a new exciting cider will be launched soon.
As we mature, we are also now finding significant demand for us to support smaller businesses with their own bespoke products, particularly those outlets who value locally produced beers.
During the 2020 lockdown work began on the next stage of our journey. We have now created a Brewery Tap and outdoor garden area at our Hawkhill location at Alnwick which is attracting tourists and local visitors alike. Our vision is to next develop the site into a fully blown Visitor Centre that will attract visitors who may want to visit the brewery, see how it is done and enjoy both a beer and some great food now also available there.
Look out for our beers which are now being stocked in a great many pubs and restaurants.

"THREE SWORDS" 2025 SPONSOR: PDL
Kirkstall Kirkstall Brewery is the product of both history and dedication to great beer. Since 1152, beer was brewed by the Cistercian Monks of Kirkstall Abbey, from whom we draw a great deal of inspiration. Long after the dissolution of the monasteries, the first Kirkstall Brewery Company rose on the banks of the River Aire in 1833, and produced highly-regarded beers for 150 years, shipped as far as Australia and New Zealand on its own barges and steamships.
Whilst our own brewery’s history begins as recently as 2011, we have for over ten years been dedicated to producing the best beer possible in a range of styles and formats. Before that, we were the first to import Sierra Nevada to the UK in 2003, and helped introduce the likes of Odell, Stone, Mikkeller, Oskar Blues and Dogfish Head to these shores.
These pioneers of American craft beer helped define our inspirations when it came to brewing beers of our own – and Sierra Nevada even helped us out with some of the hops we needed. Learning from those modern grand masters gave us firm grounding for the kind of beer we are known for: bold, hoppy and without compromise. That said, we also see our beer as a connection to the great historic tradition of Yorkshire beer, which extends to our pubs and the many artefacts we have collected over the years, as well as the drinkability and balance of our beers.
Whilst we have many proud achievements and a heritage to be proud of, we do not rest on our laurels and remain defined by our beliefs and actions in the present day. We believe in connecting the legacy of our past to the innovations of the present, with an unrelenting focus on brewing and serving truly great beer deserving of your appreciation.

Spenside Stables Brewery For many years High Spen and surrounding areas have benefitted from having a local brewery. The Old Potting Shed ‘TOPS’, a brewery renowned for fantastic high quality cask ales. Following Covid brewer Ray Swan decided hang up the hops and retire.
Having had a keen interest and a desire to brew for some time and in agreement with Mr Ray Swan, Mark Lynn decided to take over the mantle. In partnership with local micropub owner Mark Walker aka ’Wig’, who can provide an outlet for sales and business contacts, Spenside Stables Brewery was born.
The brewery now has a different home of historical interest as it is located in what are the only existing original Pit Pony stables remaining in the Northeast, indeed the stables at Beamish Museum are actual replicas of these buildings.
It has been all hands-on deck as the two Marks have worked hard in renovating the stables and establishing the brewery.
Our aim is to continue to provide top quality cask ales to High Spen and surrounding areas.
We will be using established recipes and developing new flavours as we progress.

Cheviot
Cheviot Brewery is microbrewery situated on the Ford & Etal Estate in North Northumberland, producing exciting real ales since 2018.
Like all good ideas, the idea to set up a brewery happened over a throw away remark over a beer, or maybe a few beers, in a Barcelona brewery tap in 2015. Whilst such ideas usually stay in the pub, Pete, Jonathan and Neil turned that remark into a serious conversation and a lot of research. Three years and two months later with ale in our fermenters and cask orders in place, this dream became a reality, thanks not only to a real desire to make great beer that we want to drink but with help and support from all over, not least from the Ford & Etal estate whom have renovated a derelict property on the estate to become Cheviot Brewery.
Now in its 4th year of brewing Cheviot brewery now runs the Black Bull Inn at Etal and Cheviot Tap, our onsite tap bar for drinks and events.

Darwin Brewery Beagle 4.1 Beagle Blonde/Golden Ale, light and refreshing, hopped with Willamette for a citrus finish.
"BEAGLE" 2025 SPONSOR: Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

Theakston Brewery Lightfoot 4.1 Lightfoot
CONTINENTAL ‘BLONDE BEER’ STYLE CASK ALE
Our Lightfoot beer is named after the only other brewery in Masham, at the time, which Theakston took over in 1919. The Lightfoot and Theakston families were close and indeed linked through marriage and therefore it was a natural amalgamation of two well-established businesses. For many years it was rumoured that Theakston took over Lightfoot because they had a better cricket team something that was deemed unacceptable to the brewers in Red Lane! Lightfoot has always been a popular seasonal ale in fact so much so that in 2010 it became a permanent addition to our range and is now available all year round. It’s light, fruity flavour makes it an ideal accompaniment to light curries, seafood dishes and summer salads or on a hot summer’s day perfect just on its own!
Cask Lightfoot is now officially gluten free, click here to learn more!
A hop-forward, zesty, floral blonde beer brewed with Munich Malt and bursting with citrus flavour from an abundant use of German Perle and Mittelfruh hops creating a delicious thirst quenching, continental-blonde style beer.

Hexhamshire In 1989, we took over the Dipton Mill Inn in Hexhamshire, just south of the market town of Hexham in the heart of Northumberland. The inn is an authentic traditional country pub, where a warm welcome and very often a roaring fire will greet you, along with home cooked food and of course a great selection of beers.
Once established in the running the Dipton Mill Inn we began to dream of brewing our own range of beers and selling them throughout the region; and so Hexhamshire Brewery was born.
We’ve now being brewing for over a quarter of a century and we have learned a huge amount along the way about traditional brewing methods, which ingredients produce the best results and what kinds of beers our customers like to drink, we remain innovative and always looking to improve.
You can now buy our bottled beer from our online shop!

Originally made as an exclusive house ale made for our local pub, The Black Bull in Etal , on the very same Ford & Etal Estate that is home to our brewery. The Black Bull is the only thatched pub in Northumberland and situated just down the road from Etal Castle that played an important role in the Battle of Flodden Field, after which one of our popular pales, Flodden Thirst is named.
The pubs ethos, a focus on local produce and supporting the local community echoes that of our own, so it is great that we have been able to collaborate with them on this brew.
This dark bitter is now on general release as Etale.

Flying Gang Brewing A NEW brewery and taproom has opened in Ponteland.
Flying Gang Brewing, which calls itself ‘the best brewery you’ve never heard of’, had its first customers on April 17 2021.
Andrew Findlay, brewer and director at Flying Gang Brewing, said: “Our first weekend was really good. Lots of locals came down and had a look. The sun shone which is always a help!”
The brewery, which also operates the popular Left Luggage Room in Monkseaton, hopes to welcome more than just ale enthusiasts to its new operation, and has a wide selection of gins in particular.
Andrew said: “We have our own beers – three pales and one stout – and we’re just seeing how people react to them on tap weekends.“We’ve also gone for a selection of stuff that non-beer drinkers can enjoy as well. If we’re just beer focused that can put couples and big groups off.
“In terms of gin, we went for the last dozen best ones we’ve had.”

About Josh and what happened. ….
JOSH (Josh’s Osteosarcoma Support & Help Foundation) was set up in Joshua Smith’s
memory after he sadly lost his battle with Osteosarcoma on May 5th 2021 aged 15 years
old. The JOSH charity was established in May 2023.
Josh was a lively and sporty boy who loved Rugby and played for Rockcliffe Rugby Club,
Whitley Bay. After a knock in a rugby match Josh had a constant ache in his arm which
continued for weeks after the initial impact. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with
Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) almost immediately after initially going to the doctor. Josh
and his family went through a two-year ordeal of chemotherapy and treatment at the
RVI. To make matters worse, covid added more complications to his travel to town for
treatment, for visitation from his family and for home/hospital transitions. Josh and his
family remained positive and demonstrated exemplary strength and determination.
Then, just a few weeks before Josh and his twin sister should have celebrated their 16th
birthday, Josh lost his battle with cancer and we lost Josh.
It was Josh’s wish that young people with cancer from the Northeast of England, have
the opportunity to spend a few days in the countryside, not too far from the RVI if the
need arises, to enjoy a holiday with their family and loved ones. This wasn’t an option for
Josh and his family.
The trustees of JOSH would like to realise Josh’s wish, in his memory.
What we are trying to do….
Our vision is to provide respite holidays and holiday accommodation to children in the
North-East with a life-limiting or life-threatening diagnosis of childhood cancer, allowing
them and their families to make precious memories.
JOSH – Josh’s Osteosarcoma Support & Help Foundation will place the children referred
to us by the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle at the heart of everything that we do!
We need to raise money for the holiday cottage itself, make it accessible for those
needing wheelchair access and continue to raise money in order to pay for the
maintenance, upkeep and organisation of the bookings.
